For those who don’t recognize this little lady, this is Debbie from the Hanna-Barbera show Speed Buggy. Like Jabberjaw, Speed Buggy was one of Hanna-Barbera’s attempts at recreating the success of Scooby-Doo, this time with the mascot being a talking car. The human cast for this series was smaller than many of the others, presumably so they could easily fit into Speed Buggy along with any side characters the episode had. Debbie was the only girl in the group, the other two being Mark (kinda like a dark-haired Freddie) and Tinker (kinda like Shaggy if he was a mechanic). I think of Hanna-Barbera’s many mystery solving ladies, Debbie might be the most conventionally pretty. For me she doesn’t quite reach the levels of Velma, or Shelly, who are probably my favorites, but her design is very pretty. Her personality is a bit on the generic side, I think, and she’s not really that different than early Daphne, but I do like her design a lot. Unfortunately, being the only gal, I don’t have any convenient lesbian pairings for her like I do the Scooby-Doo and Jabberjaw gals (and I’m really not super interested in drawing Mark or Tinker, or Speed Buggy for that matter). That’s why we’ve got her posing solo here. I might do a bit more solo work with her in the future, I don’t know, or I might try crossing her over with some of the other girls from these shows who are also the only girls in their teams.
As for this pic, I put Debbie on the table we see them building Speed Buggy on in the opening title sequence. It’s zoomed in pretty close ’cause that was just a brown table in a featureless blue void, but I put a few mechanical parts lying around for more context. Anyway, I hope you all like Debbie and enjoy seeing her like this.
