Comic

Closing Time, Page One

So “Closing Time” is a smallish comic project I’m trying out. The idea is to use a simpler approach to the paneling based on some other short comics I’ve seen around, which I’m hoping will make it possible to do comics that are longer/more substantial than One-Shots, but not take years like my full ongoing comics. To try this out I’m using a somewhat popular crossover crack ship I’ve seen between Tiana and Nanami, which I alluded to a while back in Nanami’s first Character Ask. Using that Ask as a set-up, I thought it’d be fun to see them together here in this format. I’m expecting this comic to run 6-8 pages, though I might end up trimming it shorter if I can. We’ll see.

January ’24 One-Shot

Here is the first One-Shot comic of 2024. The premise of this one is to bring in friends of former NHML winners. Obviously there’ve been a lot of NHML winners, but the Subscriber who submitted this script picked four they liked. Our first panel has Ryō Kurokiba and Alice Nakiri from Food Wars, the only one of these I’ve seen, representing Ikumi Mito from the May 2019 NHML. The second panel has Monaca Towa and Kotoko Utsugi from Danganronpa, representing Toko Fukawa from the June 2022 NHML. The third panel has Ren Amamiya, Makoto Niijima and Haru Okumura from Persona 5, representing Sae Niijima from the November 2018 NHML. The final panel features Balalaika, Roberta and Eda from Black Lagoon, all three women who had caught my eye but I never did anything with, representing Revy from the November 2016 NHML.

Butt Witch’s Busy Weekend, Page 10

I decided to go with Velma for the next guest on Butt Witch’s livestream. A while ago I wrote an AI-assisted story involving Velma and the Butt Witch (as well as Mitsue) that’s set in the Studio, and referenced it a bit in the dialogue here. I also referenced the “Best Ass” series of polls I ran on Twitter some time ago, where Velma beat Butt Witch in one of the early rounds. I thought these connections would give them some material to work with for a dynamic, even though this is the first time I’ve drawn them together. I’ll begin working on the next page soon, though who can say when it’ll be ready to release.

Clean Break, Page 5

When my Subscribers decided on the new straight ongoing comic, they voted first on the characters and then the story. After getting Eren, Armin and Mikasa, there was some back-and-forth over which portion of Attack on Titan the comic would take place in. At the time, putting it earlier in the show won out, hence the comic up to this point. This month only one script was submitted, and it called for moving the comic into sometime between seasons three and four, during a period conveyed mostly in flashbacks. I’m not thrilled about abruptly cutting off the comic’s momentum in this way, and I’m a little worried the title no longer makes sense, but hopefully people will still be able to enjoy however much of this one we have left at this point.

December ’23 One-Shot

The winning One-Shot script this month features a smattering of characters from The Legend of Korra and Attack on Titan. The script called for their late-season designs, which I hope I was able to do (especially for TLoK, aside from Korra herself I don’t really know how anyone’s designs change). It also features the debuts of Sasha and Kuvira, although in both cases I feel I’ll be using different looks for them if they show up again.
