So this is an idea I had a while ago, but never did anything with. I couldn’t tell you where it started, but the image of Maki and Yoinks playing some one-on-one just felt kinda right to me. I didn’t have anywhere to use the concept, really, but after doing Closing Time I decided to try and make this work following the approach I did for that comic. This page is a little more complex than any I did for Closing Time, and it won’t be the way the rest of the comic looks, but I wanted to get some stuff out of the way so the rest of the pages can be focused on the action.
Here’s a Fusion Bio page for Chun-Chi. I’ve always had mixed feelings about Chun-Chi, since the two characters she’s mixed from are pretty similar already. That also translates into her fashion, but hey a fair number of people still seem to be fond of her regardless.
Also, for anyone interested, here is the Q&A video I did for Subscribers last month:
I decided to run a new NHS Fusion poll on SubscribeStar, focusing on non-human characters to try and get an interesting/weird result. The Subscribers voted for Zarbon and Sliver the Hedgehog, and hopefully the result is weird enough. I wanted to keep a body type similar to Zarbon’s, though I drew him a bit less muscular. I thought Zarbon’s skin tone would look good with Silver’s hair color, so I went that direction instead of mixing the colors like I often do for these Fusions. I like the skin-toned foot sole look I’ve been doing with Surge’s pics, though, so I kept that for Zilvon here.
Nicola was a Fusion who I felt kina went under the radar. When I designed her, I looked to Ryo-Ohki from Tenchi Muyo as to which animal parts were prominent in making a “cabbit”, which seemed to be mostly bunny ears and tail with a cat’s face. I feel like Nicole’s facial elements ended up less obvious than I’d hoped for, but I still think Nicola’s kinda a fun furry. Since she’s so blue, I hope varying her color scheme with some clothing will help her come across a bit better in this second pic.
Here’s another Fusion Bio page. Gumbaddin was pretty well-received when he debuted, but I haven’t really had the chance to draw him again until now. I pictured his style being a bit like a modern take on Aladdin’s style in Magi, and that allowed me to continue his blue theme from the poll he was first spawned from.
While I’ve resolved to cut back on adding too many new Fusions to the Studio, I do still want to do them occasionally. I had the idea a while ago to run a Fusion poll for Subscribers made up of only First Shoot rookies, so once we hit ten I decided we could celebrate that way. So, of the first ten FS rookies, Yor and Power ended up winning the poll. I can’t say this result is terribly surprising, and I decided to go with the funniest name option I had on my list. I hope you all like Powyor, and maybe we’ll see her again down the road.
