I kind of meant to do these two for MomSwap earlier, but other stuff got in the way. Kipo and Song don’t really get to spend normal mother/daughter time together in their original show, but in the Xoverse their lives are a bit different. There’s no apocalypse or Mutes in the Xoverse, but their are mutants in the vein of X-Men (which is also where the MHA cast and similar characters get their powers in that setting, for the record). Instead of her origin story from the show, Xoverse Kipo is just a mutant in that sense, being born with her purple skin and jaguar abilities. Her mom is also just a normal mom in this universe, and like many mother/daughter pairings in the Xoverse they have an account on the popular MomSwap app.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought of Huey when they first saw Wolf in Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. They’re both cute, angry little things with big hair (though Wolf’s can’t quite compare to Huey’s), and they seemed like a natural pairing for a series like the 1 Club. When I first drew Wolf sixty-nining with Kipo, I was confident I’d be drawing her a lot. I’m extremely fond of her, but for whatever reason I just never got around to drawing her again. Now that I managed to fit in a second appearance for her, we’ll see if I get around to using her more in the future.
I’m really happy Kaori seems to have picked up some fans and is getting questions for Asks. I was thinking about this question, trying to think of anyone around the Studio she might want to work with, but it wasn’t clicking quite right. When it comes to Kaori in yuri content, the main thing I want to do is pair her with other women from City Hunter. She mentions Saeko in her answer, but there were other one-episode characters I thought she’d pair well with, too. However, Asks can only use characters who’ve been established in my work already, and the question seemed to be more about the Studio setting, so I did pick someone to pair her with. Kipo’s showed up in a few other people’s Asks now, and I kinda find it easy to picture her making lots of friends and getting involved in people’s Asks like this. It just fits my understanding of her character and how she’d fit into an environment like the Near Hentai Studios. So I pulled her in here for this, partly for that, and partly because I liked the idea of a 1985 anime character scissoring a 2015 webcomic-turned-western cartoon character. They couldn’t be from much different worlds.
I only have a passing knowledge of Soul Eater and its characters, but my understanding of Maka is that she’s fairly studious. I let Kipo be her study buddy here, ’cause Kipo also enjoys studying (particularly math and science), and like I mentioned when she showed up in Yoichi’s Ask, she’s the type of character who gets along with practically anybody. Also, this is just a pairing I don’t think anyone else would think to make, and I always enjoy exploring out-there relationships that can come about in the Studio environment.
So I recently watched Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, a new Dreamworks series on Netflix. I really enjoyed it, and I was also immediately drawn to Kipo and Wolf, the main two female leads. Kipo’s the pinkish-purplish girl on top in this pic and the titular character, and Wolf is the younger girl underneath her. I think they’re both super cute, and I enjoyed seeing their friendship develop over the course of the first season. I don’t know how much I’ll be drawing them in the future, but I’m definitely open to the idea of returning to this series in the future.
